MARYLAND STATE WINNER

11-year-old Sierra wanted to make school work fun as well as educational. So she decided to put two of her favorite things together - monkey and math to create a video game for kids at school. In her game, "Monkey Around With Math", you are the monkey, and you get to swing from tree to tree collecting bananas. The more bananas you collect, the more points you get. Each banana is a math problem (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, metric system, fractions, etc.). Sierra says her game will increase your speed and skill in math, while having fun at the same time. Her video game idea won first place in the 2009 By Kids For Kids Invent A Game Maryland Challenge. Sierra won a $1000 (face value) U.S. savings bond and a Best Buy gift card.

Sierra nominated Marcy L. Moller as the teacher who inspired her the most to come up with her winning idea. Sierra said she created a math board game in Marcy's class which was the basis for her winning video game idea, “Monkey Around with Math”. Marcy received a $250 retail gift card from By Kids For Kids.

"My goal as an educator is to inspire children to be life-long learners. I can only teach them for a few short months, but if I share with them my love of learning than hopefully they will be inspired to go out and continue learning on their own as Sierra has." - Marcy L. Moller
