Westminster Resident Wins Maryland ‘INVENT-A-GAME’ CHALLENGE
Sierra Bouthner, 11, wins Maryland 'INVENT-A-GAME’ Challenge
for her game, Monkey Around with Math.
Stamford,
CT- December 2, 2009—By Kids For Kids Co. (BKFK) announces that Sierra Bouthner,
11, of Westminster has won the Maryland ‘Invent-A-Game’ Challenge, a competition
where kids from Maryland were challenged to invent a new video game. This marked
the fourth year that BKFK has produced invention challenges for the state of
Maryland. The Invent-A-Game Challenge was a national competition sponsored by
Best Buy and EA with a Maryland Statewide prize awarded through the support of
The Edison Venture Fund and the United Inventors Association.
Sierra’s winning online game entry is called, Monkey Around with Math.
The main character in the game is a monkey whose goal is to collect as many
bananas as possible in order to score points. That’s easier said than done,
since each banana triggers a math problem that must be solved before the timer
runs out. Collect enough bananas in this game of quick thinking and you get to
advance to the next level where a new, more challenging mathematical chapter
presents itself.
As the Maryland State winner, Sierra Bouthner won a special $1,000 prize. She
was also automatically entered into the national version of the contest.
Ultimately, the grand prize winner of the national competition was Dan Slutz,
17, of Canton, Ohio for his game “Rhythm,” which immerses players into the world
of music.
Sierra Bouthner, commenting on her award, said: “I wanted to come up with a new
way to make school work more fun!”
Norman Goldstein, the founder and CEO of BKFK, said: “We congratulate Sierra on
her winning video game submission, which provides an innovative and fun way for
kids to learn about math. We appreciate the contributions of
Best Buy, EA, Edison Venture Fund and the UIA—and look forward to working with
Maryland’s creative kids for many years to come.”
The Maryland Invent-A-Game Challenge was presented by Best Buy and EA.
Participating sponsors included the United Inventors Association and the Edison
Venture Fund.
