Webster, NY Resident Wins New York "INVENT-A-GAME" CHALLENGE

Garrison Davis, 14, wins New York 'INVENT-A-GAME' Challenge for his game, Orbiter
 

Stamford, CT- December 3, 2009-By Kids For Kids Co. (BKFK) announces that Garrison Davis, 14, of Webster, NY has won the New York 'Invent-A-Game' Challenge, a competition where kids from New York where challenged to invent a new video game. The 'Invent-A-Game' Challenge was a national competition sponsored by Best Buy and EA with a New York statewide prize awarded through the support of The Edison Venture Fund and the United Inventors Association.

Garrison's winning online game entry is called: Orbiter. In this game, you are a space ship that orbits through many objects such as planets, stars, moons, UFO's, asteroids and more. You have limited fuel, so you must use the interplanetary objects to your advantage and hitch a ride on their gravity. Orbiter combines the complexity of gravity and space and makes it simple with point-and-click architecture, fun for all ages. Players use boosters to break out of one object's gravity and in to another's. The character needs to exit the galaxy, as a robot cleaning force is coming through to purify the area to make it inhabitable for humans. Unfortunately, the robots do this by destroying everything smaller than a medium-sized moon. Your ship is one of things small enough to get exterminated. You need to conserve gas to exit the galaxy, thus the feature for 'orbiting' becomes a key idea.

As the New York State winner, Garrison Davis won a special $1,000 prize. He was also automatically entered into the national version of the contest. Ultimately, the grand prize winner of the national competition was Dan Slutz, 17, of Canton, Ohio for his game "Rhythm," which immerses players into the world of music.

Garrison Davis commenting on his award said: "I'm thrilled to win the New York 'Invent-A-Game' Challenge. My advice to other kids who want to invent video games is to constantly keep brainstorming solutions and fixing flaws. You just might even surprise yourself!"

The New York Invent-A-Game Challenge was presented by Best Buy and EA. Participating sponsors included the United Inventors Association and the Edison Venture Fund.
