Ideation Tips: Design  Your Signature Fashion Identity
So, you think you’ve got an eye for fashion? Before you start designing your own signature fashion identity, take a minute to think about all the latest hot trends; What makes them so special and why your design should be the next fashion ‘must have’ item? We have some basic ‘How- To’s for you to get started with your one-of-a-kind creation!

Step 1. Find Your Fashion Statement: A Fashion statement identifies the thought behind your design. Here are some tips to figure out what your statement could be.

o Where will your fashion statement be made? Something you wear or carry, on your feet, on your back, around your neck, in your hair, on your hair or using your hair etc.
o Art speaks to us, so what is your fashion about? Beauty, function, making a statement, comfort, identity, versatility, rebellion etc.
o What materials speak to who you are? Beads, glitz, flash, nature, skins, fibers, weaves, color, darkness, stark etc.
o What will carry your fashion statement? Jewelry, clothing, shoes, bags, backpacks, luggage, belts, scarves, hats, makeup, skin art etc.

Step 2. Find your favorite design or designer and then SCAMMPER to find out what you can do for your own creation.

o Substitute –What could you use instead; another material, fabric or blend?
o Combine – How about combining two or more styles?
o Adapt – Can you make the design more comfortable or more stylish?
o Minify – Can you make it shorter or portable?
o Magnify – Can you make it larger, longer, wider or add something?
o Put to other uses – How else could you wear it?
o Eliminate – What could you get rid of?
o Reverse – Could you wear it backwards?

Step 3. Design It: You can draw or sketch your design, make a sample, or you can jump right in and create one. There is no right or wrong way to create designs!

o Make sure you find a name for your design
o Define what your fashion says: how will people wear it, who wears it, when and where.

Step 4. Test It: You can show your sketches to people or just wear it to find out their reactions to your design.

o Find your audience: Decide where potential buyers of your design will be; campus, coffee shops, on the street.
o Find a model: Dress your model with your design to find out if people get what you are trying to say.
o Watch and learn: Observe peoples’ reactions & ask them what they think.
o Listen to what they say: A positive response means your design made a statement and is ready to be repeated!
