Ideation Tips: Produce Your Own TV Show
Where do great TV shows, podcasts, and webisodes come from? From creative minds like yours! In this particular section, we focus on storytellers who would find their creative side working with videos!
This is what we know about storytellers like you:
  • You love to Speak Out
  • You have a great imagination and one-of-a-kind insights.
  • You understand the full spectrum of human emotions.
  • You're a magician with words.
  • You can make people laugh, cry or shriek in fear.

Here are some tips to help you generate the best ideas possible to tell us your story!

Step 1. Define Your Story: Think about out what identifies you and what is unique about you. Imagine yourself on TV and develop a pitch for the next great kid TV show!

Step 2. Do Your Research: What shows are already out there starring young people? What would make your show different from theirs?

o View shows on television with a critical eye
o Read blogs and entertainment journals to learn what is getting high ratings and what is coming out this season.
o Do some historical research. What types of shows have been done in the past that have done well?
o Check out your TV Guide and think about what you enjoy on tv and what you think is missing.

Step 3. Make a Pilot: Grab a video camera and try and shoot a sample of what you’re thinking. Grab a couple of friends and act out a sample story.

It will help others see your vision more clearly. If you can’t make a video, storyboard it or write what is called a pitch.

Step 4. Test It: Get thoughts and reactions to understand if your show would actually be as good as you think. Use your classmates and friends as a sounding board to critique the campaign
o Does it work?
o Will people like it?
o Is the campaign sending out the correct message to its audience?

Once you have a great idea, store it in your locker. Just log on and create a new idea. You can work on it, have a friend review it, or let a wider audience review it.

Don’t forget – if you are sharing your ideas, you are sharing intellectual property.
