Louis Braille

Braille

  • Louis invented Braille when he was 12 years old in 1821.
  • He was in a school for the blind when he learned to read. But his school's library only had 14 huge books with raised letters - and Louis read them all.
  • A soldier named Charles Barbier visited Louis' school and taught the kids about a code that soldiers could use to talk to each other without speaking.
  • Braille saw that this night writing system could be adapted for the blind.

  • He published his first Braille book in 1829 at the age of 20.
  • Almost every country around the world uses Braille today.
  • A 12 year old changed the way blind people get around and communicate. He changed the world - what can you do to change the world?
