Wheelchair Backpack Holder
Inventor: Chandler
Invented at age: 12
He saw a problem: Chandler saw his neighbor who is in
a wheelchair struggling to get her belongings out of her
backpack hanging on the back of her Wheelchair. Kids who
are confined to wheelchairs have difficulty independently
reaching their backpacks that hang on the back of the
chair. This is frustrating and forces them to rely on
help from others.
He had an idea: To create a device that would hold the
backpack on the back of the wheelchair and with an easy
to use lever enables the user to swing the backpack around
to where they can reach it to retrieve items from it.
He
developed it: Chandler sketched out his idea and with
the help of his family set to build his invention with
steel tube, elbow fittings, springs, and nuts and bolts.
The idea was a hit: He won the Craftsman/NSTA Young Inventors
Contest. He was inducted into the National Gallery for
America's Young Inventors. He won the DaVinci Award for
designing for accessibility.
