Whitcomb L. Judson

Zipper

  • Mr. Judson, an American engineer from Chicago, was awarded 30 patents over a 16 year inventing career.
  • In 1890, he invented a metal zipper device with locking teeth which he patented as a "clasp-locker'' on Aug. 29, 1893.
  • Like many inventions, his invention needed improvement to make it more usable for everyone.
  • A Swedish-American engineer Gideon Sundbach helped improve it.
