Hedy Lamarr

Various Inventions

  • Actress and Inventor Hedy Lamarr's life story is far more interesting than any of her movies. She was known as one of the most beautiful women to ever appear in films.
  • Her acting began in Austrian and Czech film in 1930.
  • Trapped in a marriage with a controlling, older man (who was selling munitions to Adolf Hitler), she drugged her maid/guard and hopped a train to London. She eventually ended up in the United States, in Hollywood.
  • But she wasn't just an actress. She was a great inventor.
  • She was a social butterfly in Hollywood and met a composer named George Antheil at a party. She was sitting on his piano when the concept for the torpedo guidance system came to her.
  • Lamarr's frequency-hopping idea is the basis for modern communication technology used in devices ranging from cordless telephones to WiFi Internet connections.
