George Nissen

Trampoline

  • He graduated from high school at 16 and started tinkering with his idea for building a bouncing rig.

  • He was a gymnast who had watched circus performers use safety nets as a way to rebound and perform additional tricks. He thought he could use something similar to practice gymnastics.

  • He built a prototype in 1934 and since then has been a tireless supporter and promoter of the trampoline and ways to keep fit using it. He also holds more than 40 patents about sports and fitness!

  • Fun Fact: College gymnastics’ highest award is called the Nissen Award.
