Born in
Kiev, Russia, Igor Sikorsky's
mother was
a doctor and his father was a psychology professor.

While
still a schoolboy he built several model aircraft and
helicopters.

Sikorsky
first achieved international recognition in 1913 when he was
just 14 when he designed and flew the first multimotor airplane. Igor began developing the helicopter at the age of
19.
- Immigrating to the United States in 1919, he founded the
Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation, the forerunner of the
present helicopter manufacturing giant, the Sikorsky Division of
United Technologies.
- He developed the world's first four-engine airplane in 1913,
this plane was an early model of the most successful bomber of
World War I.
- He successfully flew the first VS-300 in 1939.
