Needle Beetle - Distributed to Children's Hospitals Across Nation
Invented by a 9 year old boy, the “Needle Beetle” makes it easier for sick children to receive intravenous injections
STAMFORD, Conn., August 23, 2005 ‑ BKFK Company (BKFK) announced today that 5000 “Needle Beetles” invented by Brandon Whale of Pittsburgh, PA., shipped to 183 children’s hospitals cross America. Mattel (NYSE: MAT) produced and distributed the “Needle Beetles” in coordination with the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). The “Needle Beetle” is a friendly beetle-looking squeezable toy which facilitates intravenous shots by raising the veins in the arm, and diverting kids’ attention away from the unpleasantness of receiving shots. The “Needle Beetles” were donated to the children’s hospitals courtesy of Mattel, BKFK and Brandon Whale.
The
“Needle Beetle”, represented by BKFK, solves the common problem
of how to keep children relaxed and occupied while receiving intravenous
injections. Brandon Whale, now 15, visited a children’s hospital
and observed that kids receiving shots were frequently tense and frightened.
Further, the children’s anxiety made it all the more difficult for
nurses to administer needles. Brandon realized the need for a fun
and diversionary device to help both the nurses and kids, and set out
to create the “Needle Beetle.”
“I began making the “Needle Beetles” in my spare time at home, but the demand for them soon became overwhelming,” said inventor Brandon Whale, “with the help of Mattel, BKFK and NACHRI, the “Needle Beetles” will be able to get to the patients who need them faster than ever before. It's a great feeling to know that my invention is making things easier for the kids who need it.”
Brandon Whale’s first invention, “PaceMate” assists pacemaker patients with transmitting EKG results to the hospital from wherever they may be. For the “PaceMate” Brandon was one of the youngest inductees into The National Gallery of America’s Young Inventors at the age of 8. Brandon’s brother, Spencer Whale, now 13, was also a young inductee at the age of 8 for his “Kid Kare” Riding Car invention, which provides mobility for kids in hospitals attached to IV’s.
“I'm very proud of their inventiveness and accomplishments, but I'm most proud of where their hearts are. They have used their creativity to help improve the quality of life for people who struggle with health problems. It shows that one is never too young to make a difference.” said Danette Rocco, mother of Brandon and Spencer Whale.
"Brandon Whale's "Needle Beetle" demonstrates a consciousness and depth of character beyond his years," said Norman Goldstein, CEO of BKFK Co., "we are proud to have both Whale brothers onboard the All-Star BKFK invention team and look forward to their continued success."
